you’ll be needing these
Just finished a quilt for a high school senior from our church. Spent a lot of time sewing stitches in, ripping stitches out, poking myself with quilting pins, and thinking. Thinking about what what advice I could give to someone just starting college, what advice I wish someone had given me. I considered:
the practical
- get an internship (or two or three)
- don’t be afraid to visit your professors during office hours
- fruit loops go surprisingly well with cheap beer
the wistful
- be careful with your heart
- appreciate every moment
- know that someday you will cry with longing when you remember endless hours of napping studying in beautiful libraries
even the very simple
- always respect yourself
- always be kind
- never do anything you’ll regret
but in the end, the only advice I can offer is
- you will make mistakes
- good friends will bandage you up when you get hurt…try to do the same for them
- know you are loved
That last one is the best, and I don’t even get to claim credit for it. It’s right there on the label that goes on every quilt handed out:
May this quilt bring you comfort as it reminds you that you are loved.
Oh, and I’m serious about the fruit loops. ♥
what’s your advice?

advice i would give… i actually did a post about this yesterday, how the perspective changes over time as to how we see our bodies. advice i would give to a high school graduated today: LOVE YOUR body, don’t pine for anybody elses. challenge it, take care of it, listen to it, respect it, and enjoy the hell out of it.
in regards to your question about raw… first, are you a member of the raw group on facebook? i’m trying to help people connect through there that they might not now yet. second, look at your life and the people in it, are there women you know who can’t stand still because they always need to be doing? are there women who are free in their expressions of love and emotion? are there women that have intrinsic artistic talents (even hairdressers often fall into this). look through the women in your life and find the ones you can get messy with. they don’t have to be artists, just willing to get messy and support one another. i know that when i create art it makes a space of vulnerability that can often cause me to run and hide… but when i’m with my tribe, i’m safe in that vulnerability and the words flow easily. then pick a project. what are you interested in learning more about? maybe a word canvas that represents your word or intentions for the year? maybe art journals? maybe photography? knitting? paper crafts? the whole paint is to create art in a safe environment where cattiness is not tolerated. if i can be of any further assistance, please let me know, i’d love to chat more. good luck!
love and light

My advice?
Life is very short – take chances
“This too shall pass”
Don’t settle for anyone who doesn’t adore you and who doesn’t make you laugh a lot.
Move as much as you can (your body)
laugh. a lot.
